about
I am a ceramic artist/potter living and working in Kingsbridge, South Devon. I am Finnish, but I emigrated to the UK in 1996. I am a great-granddaughter of communist revolutionaries, and I come to clay from a farming family via a winding journey that has involved a City career, tech startups, arctic expeditions, a music degree as a mature student, running a CrossFit gym, an international live events business and 20 years raising a child with a severe learning disability. I live by the sea with my three children, my partner Andrew who is a music producer and an artist, and two big dogs.
I work by creating collections, with a loose underlying theme or an idea, a thread that connects the pieces that emerge from the making process. I see myself as much an abstract artist as a potter, as the surface design is the foundation for my work. The paintings, the form of the vessel, and the material itself come together in an interplay of colour and elements.
My work is intentional more than it is intuitive. I am driven by curiosity and I collect inspiration from the visual world around me: from art, architecture, interior design, nature and popular culture. Memories and stories from my life tend to show up too. My intention is to create objects that help you bring beauty and joy into your everyday life, objects that radiate energy and freedom and fun. My Finnish roots and the Finnish design heritage influence heavily my work.
I release a new collection online a few times a year. Together with my partner Andrew, an artist and a songwriter/musician, we run Darklight Studios & Gallery on Fore Street in Kingsbridge, Devon. You can see and buy our work there as well as online. Thank you for visiting.
